The Truth About Medicare Call Centers

The Truth About Medicare Call Centers

Be wary of unsolicited calls claiming to be from Medicare, as they are often scams. Medicare will never call you to ask for personal information or to sell you plans, so always be skeptical and hang up if you receive such a call. Here's a breakdown of why you should be cautious and what to do:

Why be cautious?

  • Medicare won't call you: Medicare will never call you to ask for your Medicare number, Social Security number, or financial information.
  • Scammers impersonate Medicare: Scammers often pretend to be from Medicare or a related organization to gain your trust and steal your information.
  • They use various tactics: They may claim you need a new Medicare card, have a problem with your account, or are eligible for a refund, all to pressure you into sharing your information.
  • They may threaten you: Some scammers threaten to cancel your coverage or benefits if you don't provide information or take action.

If You Receive a Suspicious Call

What to do if you receive a suspicious call:

  • Hang up: If you receive an unsolicited call from someone claiming to be from Medicare or a related organization, especially if they are asking for personal information, hang up immediately.
  • Don't share information: Never share your Medicare number, Social Security number, or any other personal information with unsolicited callers.
  • Verify the caller: If you are unsure about a call, hang up and call Medicare directly at 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) to verify the call's legitimacy.
  • Report the scam: If you believe you have been targeted by a scam, report it to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at ReportFraud.ftc.gov or to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General at 1-800-447-8477.
  • Protect your information: Guard your Medicare number like you would your credit card number and only share it with trusted healthcare professionals or representatives.
  • Be wary of unsolicited emails, texts, or social media messages: Scammers may also try to reach you through these channels, so be cautious and don't click on links or open attachments from unknown sources.
